Brothers 1913
The photo below shows two brothers from New York in December 1913.
They look to be about 10-13 years old. Both boys have similar side
parting hair cuts. They wear similar striped double-breasted jackets
and knickers. The only difference is that the younger boy has a light-coloured
suit and the older boy a dark suit. The major difference in their
outfits is that the younger brother has a floppy bow and the older
brother a bowtie. Neckwear and collars was a popular way mothers differentiated
the outfits of younger boys in the late-19th and early 20th century.
This was, however, becoming less common by the 1910s. The boy on the
left wears glasses. His knickers are above-the-knee knickers. He has
lace-up leather high-top shoes. The boy on the right below-the-knee
knickers and buttoned high-top shoes. Both boys wear black long stockings.
Brüder 1913
Das Photo unterhalb zeigt zwei New Yorker Brüder im Dezember

Brother and Sister about 1915-20
The photo below shows a boy and his little sister, probably in the
second half of the 1910s although the early 1920s are also possible.
The photograph shows lots of interesting elements of period clothing.
The boy holds a flat cap in his hand. There were many different styles
of flat caps, note that this one is not very flat. Suits were still
commonly worn. His suit has a checked pattern. He wears a belted Norfolk
jacket and above-the-knee knickers. Apparently the boy wears long
underwear underneath the black long stockings (note the slight bulges
in the stockings). He has put on leather high-top shoes. His hair
is combed with a slightly off center part.
His little sister wears a light coloured dress with a low waistline.
The hem reaches down below the knees. There is a rounded collar. She
also wears long black stockings and buttoned high-top shoes, still
a popular style in the 1910s. Her hair has a center part and is curly
at the sides. She holds a large doll--undoubtedly her most trasured
possession.

long black stockings and buttoned high-top shoes (in the 1910s a declining
style). Her hair has a center part and is curly at the sides. She
holds a big play doll.

Working Class Family
The photo below shows a working class family with father, mother and
six children. Probably this immigrant family may have had an Italian
background and they were not real new arrivals. A possibility might
be that the parents arrived in the 1890s. This photo looks to have
been taken in the 1910s or very early 1920s. The family may have lived
in one of the big north-eastern cities. The mother is not dressed
highly fashionable and the father is not wearing a suit. The children
are fairly well dressed. So they were not really poor.
Arbeiterfamilie
