This picture was taken in mid-September 1883 in Wales. It shows a little boy wearing hugh striped protective bathing trunks. We have noted this kind of trunks in several other 19th century pictures. All these trunks were striped. Apparently they were used for younger children. For boys only as long as they had not been breeched yet. Note also the pictures of the family in the article "A Family enjoying the sea about the late 1890s". There the girls are wearing protective trunks. --- |

Probably late 1880s Wahrscheinlich späte 1880er Our guess is that this picture was taken in the late 1880s. At this time you see the first knitted sweaters also for girls. To give this outfit a little more elegance this girls wears a frilly collar on top of the sweater. ---
